Program Description
Spokane Community College, in conjunction with the Inland Northwest Aerospace Technology Center, offers the Rural Aerospace certificate at the SCC Colville Industrial Center.
This program focuses on the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform the typical duties of Precision Machining and Quality Assurance in the manufacturing industry. The program will prepare students to work with quality control systems management principles, applicable technical standards, testing inspection and reporting procedures; as well as preparing the student to work in small machine shops or manufacturing firms that produce durable goods such as metalworking and industrial machinery, aircraft parts, equipment, and components for manufactured products.
The Rural Aerospace Training Certificate, which consists of Precision Machining and Quality Assurance (one quarter each), prepares students for careers in the aerospace industry. A third quarter focus on welding and fabrication will provide skills needed for employment in rural communities. This certificate also provides the sustainability necessary for this program to continue in the rural counties.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Understand comprehensive communication skills and apply the skills in the workplace.
- Understand electrical terms, characteristics and basic applications.
- Understand hydraulic and pneumatic terms, characteristics and basic applications.
- Interpret and interpret blueprints, sketches, symbols, tolerance and dimensions.
- Make accurate measurements by identifying proper tools and demonstrate correct use.
- Understand and demonstrate basic shop tools and safety.
- Understand and demonstrate Mastercam.
- Understand heat and cool transfer theory, components and applications.
- Understand applied math concepts including estimating, using various calculators, unit measuring, problem-solving, and calculating business and personal financial scenarios.
- Analyze personal employment goals, evaluate employment obstacles and prepare an effective employment portfolio.
- Develop job search strategies and demonstrate job interviewing skills.
- Understand basic metal working theory, fluid and cutting problems, and operation of a CNC mill and lathe.
- Understand modern welding/fabrication shop technologies, processes, and equipment.
Career Opportunities
Potential careers in entry level quality assurance/quality control positions, entry level machining positions, and general industrial maintenance.
