Program Description
The challenge of management! It takes a special kind of person with a special knack to be a good business manager. Over 70 percent of the workforce in Spokane is employed in the fields of business, health care and marketing. This creates a big demand for entry-level managers and supervisors.The management program at SCC is designed to prepare students for these positions. The curriculum incorporates individual hands-on experiences while learning the basic principles of business management.
Courses in the AAS degree program include management, business law, project management, computer applications and human relations. In addition to the academic courses, there is an opportunity for team work and leadership experience through participation in College DECA, an international management and marketing organization.
All students graduating from the AAS degree program must have a minimum grade average of 2.0 on each of the required management, accounting, economic, and business courses and a cumulative minimum grade point average on all required courses in the program.
The Management Certificate at SCC is designed to provide students with business, management, and accounting basics with an emphasis on project management skills. Students are prepared to understand the concepts and methods associated with project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, and closing phases of project management. Students will utilize computer applications to manage and control project tasks, communication, costs, scheduling, and quality. In addition, this program includes leadership and teambuilding development so vital for successful project management in the workplace. Students can expect to increase job skills for entry-level employment as well as career advancement. All students graduating from the certificate program must have a minimum grade average of 2.0 on each of the required courses in the program.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Understand organizational behavior and leadership, management, business operation, finances, location and layout, record keeping, merchandising and business promotion.
- Understand the planning, organizing, leading and controlling functions of running a business on a day-to-day basis.
- Incorporate information technology and computer applications, including Internet, to the business environment.
- Understand human relations and the importance of ethics, possess an awareness of cultural diversity, the role of international business, the fundamental principles of business law, credit and collections, problem solving, and group decision processes as used in today's business world.
- Understand and possibly accept the challenging entrepreneurial role of owning their own business.
- Communicate effectively.
- Utilize management skills and knowledge by participating in cooperative education and/or supervised volunteer experience.
Career Opportunities
Employment opportunities include positions from every level - entry, supervisory, management, and owner-manager - of the manufacturing, wholesaling, and retailing of goods and services.POTENTIAL POSITIONS INCLUDE: assistant buyer, bank branch manager, business owner, department manager, hotel or motel manager, insurance agent, sales and distribution, theater manager, management trainee, retail operations manager in a variety of retail operations, customer service, and assistant manager. Salaries in the Spokane area range from $12 per hour upward depending on skills, motivation, experience, and attitude as well as the ability to sell herself/himself at the interview.
