Program Description

This program prepares individuals for employment in medical offices as medical office receptionists, coders and insurance billers. Spokane is a major regional center for medical care offering maximum opportunities for employment. Positions are available in medical clinics, medical insurance companies and private physicians' offices.

Admission Requirements:
Keyboarding Skills: 40 wpm with six or fewer errors completed at the SCC testing center or successful completion in BT 101 and 102, current first aid/CPR card or successful completion of EMS 120 or equivalent. 

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Appropriately manage telephone communications and schedule office, surgical, and diagnostic procedures.
  2. Receive patients and visitors.
  3. Apply legal and ethical standards.
  4. Create and maintain patient records; sort and disperse incoming mail.
  5. File, rebill, and troubleshoot insurance claims for the medical office to include private, government, PPO, and HMO insurances.
  6. Code using the CPT, ICD-9-CM, and ICD-10-CM coding systems.
  7. Perform typical medical office financial activities using applicable software.
  8. Correlate knowledge of general anatomy and medical terminology to perform coding and billing tasks.
  9. Perform CPR and first aid.
  10. Perform computer applications.
Students must complete all classes with a 2.0 grade or higher.

Career Opportunities

Health services are rapidly expanding to keep pace with the growing population and opportunities for medical billing and coding specialists are expected to continue to increase. Physicians in private practice, insurance companies, hospitals, clinics and various other healthcare organizations all need employees qualified in medical billing and coding.
