Program Description

This AAS degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (www.cahiim.org) and prepares students for employment in maintaining and processing health information in hospitals, nursing facilities, ambulatory care clinics and health insurance agencies. Training in a realistic work environment include managing computer databases, coding and abstracting clinical data, quality control management of information, health-related legal principles and policies, and knowledge of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and HITECH Act regulations. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification exam offered by (AHIMA).

Each required course for graduation in the first year of the curriculum must be completed with a 2.0 grade or better before proceeding to the second year of the curriculum. A 2.5 grade is required for all HIM prefix courses and a 2.0 grade or better must be maintained in all other courses required for a degree.  All HIM courses must be completed within five years. 

Prerequisite/Admission Requirements: Students desiring a course of study leading to an associate in arts degree should consult the college catalog for the specific degree requirements. The AA degree is recommended for students who may consider continuing their education in health information management or administration.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Abstract and process data from patient records using a variety of computer programs.
  2. Collect, tabulate, compute and prepare statistical reports for use by the medical staff, administration, governing board and authorized agencies.
  3. Code clinical data for reimbursement, research and other reporting purposes.
  4. Perform review of health information for patient care evaluation, quality improvement, and utilization management.
  5. Operate and evaluate various electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  6. Apply legal principles, policies, regulations and standards for the control, release and use of health information.
  7. Utilize computers to compile data, process information for prospective payment systems (PPS) and perform information processing.

Career Opportunities

Employment opportunities are excellent. Changing standards and governmental regulations cause the volume and complexity of health record systems to be dynamic and challenging. Facilities utilizing HIMs include those providing inpatient care, ambulatory care, long-term care, psychiatric care, cancer registry and medical insurance providers. POTENTIAL POSITIONS INCLUDE: release of information technician; health information technician; coder; assistant manager of health information services of large hospitals; manager of health information services of small hospitals or skilled nursing facilities; utilization manager; quality improvement coordinator; clinical documentation improvement specialist; data analyst; and privacy and security officer.
